SHIP FAQ’s
Any student registered for 9 or more credit hours will be automatically enrolled in SHIP every Fall and Spring semester if they do not complete an Opt-Out Waiver form.
If you fall below 9 credit hours before census date (the 50% refund deadline to withdraw classes), the health insurance charge is automatically removed from tuition, and you will not be enrolled on SHIP for the semester.
If you withdrawal from classes after census deadline, and tuition shows billed for 9 credits or more, the health insurance charge is not removed, and you will remain enrolled on SHIP for the semester.
Spring semester coverage is 7 months of coverage, whereas Fall is 5 months of coverage.
Only if you are a Graduate student taking 6-8 credits, or it’s your last semester before graduation and you are enrolled in under 9 credits. This step requires additional paperwork and must be submitted by the deadline. Detailed information on Special Coverages.
If you are new to MSU Denver and attending for the first time, or were not on the Spring semester Student Health Insurance Plan, you qualify for SHIP by taking 9 credit hours or more (6 if a graduate student) over the summer semester. Summer is the only semester the SHIP charge cannot be automatically charged to tuition, you must voluntarily opt-in by completing the enrollment form found on the Special Coverages webpage and paying the premium to the MSU Denver Student Insurance office.
Coverage begins the first day of the semester and ends the day before the next semester starts. The first 5 weeks of the semester you will not show having coverage at the insurance company, that is because the University deadline to enroll is 2 ½ weeks after the start of the semester. If you need medical services outside of the Health Center at Auraria during the first 5 weeks of the semester, contact the MSU Denver Student Insurance office to be manually activated at the insurance company. This will take 24 to 48 business hours to show your active coverage.
