What is Well Adult Wellness Visit/Exam?
Regular meetings with your primary care doctor or primary care physician can help assure good health and wellness. A Well Adult Wellness visit/exam is a type of preventative care visit. Preventative healthcare focuses on maintaining wellness and preventing health problems before they occur. Wellness visits or wellness exams are typically annual and are separate from other medical visit related to illness or injury.
What is Included?
A Well-adult visit focuses on preventive care and overall health maintenance. They can help guide you to make choices that promote better health, and they may catch health problems early.
It typically includes:
Review & Updates
- Medical and surgical history
- Current medications (Review of current medications, supplements, and allergies.), med refills
- Social history (smoking, alcohol, drug use, exercise, diet, stress levels).
Preventive Health Measures
- Screening tests and lab work (if applicable). Screening may vary depending on age, risk and gender (i.e. breast cancer or cervical cancer screenings)
- Immunizations
- Sexual health discussions (if relevant), STI/STD screening labs
- Nutrition and exercise recommendations
- Stress management and mental health screening
- Sleep habits
- Counseling on preventive health strategies, Substance use counseling (alcohol, tobacco, drug use)
- A cursory physical exam (a brief, general check-up rather than an in-depth evaluation)
What is NOT Included?
- A detailed physical exam (a more thorough assessment which is typically done to assess symptoms)
- Change in management of chronic (more than 3 months) conditions
- Evaluation of new medical concerns or symptoms
- Changes to medications, new prescriptions, or new specialist referrals
- If a specific concern or complaint is shared, a separate visit may be needed
Wellness insurance coverage?
While wellness exams are usually covered by insurance, your insurance might not cover all the expenses involved with the visit, such as labs or tests. Most insurance plans pay for 1 wellness exam each year. Insurance plans and coverage vary, so be sure to check with your policy.
Additional Services & Charges
If a new or existing medical issue requires attention during the visit, or if a detailed physical exam is performed, additional charges may apply. This additional charge also may or may not be covered by insurance. It is important to know and understand your insurance benefits to help prevent unexpected out-of-pocket costs.
Naturally, your doctor or care provider will talk with you about any topics you would like during your annual wellness visit. However, if you have a question about what is covered and what is not, please do not hesitate to ask at the beginning of your visit.
You or your provider may decide to schedule a separate appointment or discuss options that are not covered under your insurance plan.
Health Insurance Coverage
Each health insurance plan is different. It’s important for any patient to understand what their health insurance plan covers for Medical and Mental Health Services. More information about Health Insurance can be found online at Health Insurance.
There’s no fee associated with Crisis Service Intervention for Medical or Mental Health Services. If individuals would like follow-up care, fees include standard health insurance copayments. Self-pay options are also available. Call for additional information or to schedule an appointment.
